I so should have brought in David Gordon Green's Halloween trilogy. No idea how it's the Star Wars sequel trilogy that gets all the crap thrown its way considering. Even when Top Gun: Maverick came out, I saw people talking about how it succeeded where the sequel trilogy failed when I would think a better point of comparison would be Independence Day: Resurgence.

ID4: R and the Zack Snyder-directed DCEU movies were objectively bigger failures than the sequel trilogy. I also find it precious how people act like TLJ's massive second-weekend drop was indicative of the fan backlash even though both Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle and The Greatest Showman opened that very weekend. You could argue that Star Wars should have curbstomped them both, but either of those two movies alone is bigger box-office competition than either of Abrams's movies faced (TFA's biggest competition probably being The Revenant and RoS's being 1917). Contrast with Batman v. Superman having an even bigger second-weekend drop (albeit by percentage, not by raw numbers) with fewer excuses.
