I picked up the Game & Watch LoZ edition back when BBuy had it on sale for $30 several weeks ago. It was partly for the novelty, but I also had never beat LoZ2 or Awakening (since I got stuck in the Face Shrine then my copy got stolen).

I started by trying out LoZ2 again because I remember disliking it and not getting very far... and that kinda held up. Even after consulting a map, etc, I just didn't feel like playing very much of it. I stopped sometime after the first dungeon.

And then I finally beat Awakening. Again, wasn't a huge fan of Awakening originally and, honestly, the Switch reboot would probably have been the better pick. The kinda-nuisance with Awakening is whenever I googled something, the Switch results would come up and they changed a LOT of shit for the Switch version (generally making things easier, more convenient, etc).

However, I kinda liked it. The one thing is that, as a gamer, I've apparently just go into the habit of looking shit up instead of spending tons of time checking every area, etc, and trying to work stuff out. I blame Gamefaqs. Back when I first played OoT, I'd check Gamefaqs when I got stuck and kinda started doing that earlier and earlier over the years.

The other kinda-big thing is, for the first time ever, I didn't steal the stupid bow. I wound up saving up rupees to buy it, so I went without it until around the Face Shrine or later. It made things interesting.

While I hadn't planned on playing LoZ1 again, I'd already beaten Awakening and didn't feel like trying LoZ2 again.

Despite playing (and beating) the 3DS port of LoZ1 within the last... it might've been 3-5 years ago, I'd forgotten a lot about it. And the things that annoyed me at the time still kinda bug me (such as the overworld map not being visible).

However, I've kinda come to appreciate LoZ1 more. The amount of secrets, etc, is neat. And the lack of polish (such as keys working in any dungeon) has a certain charm. That said, I realize I missed grabbing the bow... which I should've had back in the first dungeon. When I got the boomerang, I just thought that was the dungeon's weapon and didn't look any further. Whoops.

Anyway, LoZ1 is cool for the sense of progress when you unlock the upgrades. The sword and defense upgrades feel a lot more meaningful because everything is so much more punishing.

After I finish LoZ1 again, I might have to look into clones of the original Zelda since the style is kinda fun.
