I'd say having an avatar where you can choose is more the norm in western games(Life is strange, Mass Effect, Dragon age, cyberpunk) Although Fire emblem do have gay options now and honestly Sylvando was the most obvious "queer coded" character of all time in Dragon quest so it's starting to appear more and more into japenese games.
