Even if we ignore the psychological aspects, the internet is largely unfiltered and most people have piss poor media literacy. All algorithms are set up to get you to click the stuff that gets you to keep clicking. People believe the wildest shit nowadays. This can include otherwise smart people. Yeah, in a perfect world, it shouldn't be like this and I'm not even saying it's gotten really bad yet.
