Back in the days men did it out of social obligation but that isn't the case anymore and even formal standards have significantly relaxed, just compare formal war at the turn of the 20th century to what is acceptable for men to wear in formal settings. And this is coming from someone who was into vintage fashion ten years ago and has custom clothing, I don't even wear a coat much nowadays. --- Aut viam inveniam aut faciam.
