Realistically, as much as school shootings are an inexcusable epidemic, your kids are still substantially more likely to be killed by a car on the way to school than by a shooter, thanks to how fundamentally broken and unsafe American car infrastructure is. Home schooling also eliminates the "on the way to school" part of that, but the risk is still present any time they leave the house, and becoming a hermit out of fear of danger generally isn't a very healthy thing to do.
