Bernie would have never won the general election in 2016 anyway. 2020 is a different story, but the youth vote simply wasn't strong enough yet. That's a very different story today. I still contend that it's the opposite. The "youth vote" was largely anti-establishment, so when Hillary won, giving the general appearance of screwing over Bernie, they checked out and the "moderate" anti-establishment people went to Trump, essentially permanently empowering them. To put it another way, the current horrific cultural QAnon conspiracy backlash psychos coalesced in the right wing, and I don't think they'd be there if it was Bernie v Trump.
