The good thing about texture mods is that they're pretty much harmless; with very few exceptions you can pop them in and out of your game (even mid-game) without issue. Most other mods, particularly quest mods, gameplay overhauls, and anything containing custom scripts, can harm your save if you disable them mid-playthrough. Textures are basically just a coat of paint though, so you have more freedom to experiment with them. In most cases you can even mix and match textures (if two mods overlap the same texture, the one lower in the LO will be the one visible in-game). So if you like the way a particular AiO looks on the whole but want a different mountain texture, you can have a specific mountain texture mod overwrite without issue.
