If you actually want to learn a language: Duolingo at first for basic exposure, then switch to a chatting app like HelloTalk for advancing through intermediate conversation. If you stay on Duolingo well past the basics, and you don't really like advancing to chatting, then that's a sign that you like the game of Duolingo more than you care about learning the language. That's totally ok of course, but don't expect to get conversational.

Duolingo is coming out with a GPT chatting system now though. That could be a game changer that replaces the other chat apps for intermediate. But only if it corrects your nuances really deeply and accurately, like humans do on the other apps. GPT currently struggles with that so I dunno.
