Let's start a list of JRPGs with GOOD final dungeons. FFVI.

Honestly I don't see how VI's is particularly high above the standard final dungeon. That's not to say it's bad, but it's not that much better.

I really like FFIV and V's final dungeons. IV, like III, has a lot of optional bosses guarding gear, and some interesting encounters. V throws boss fight after boss fight at you but it doesn't get old... actually, I think I just like having lots of interesting bosses thrown at me and rewarding me with gear/moves.

The Tales of series has some good ones. I like Eldrant from Tales of the Abyss, for example, it's one of my favorite final areas in games, period. Every scene in it is great, the boss fights are tense, and the locale, a recreation of a city that was destroyed years ago, its people massacred, is simultaneously austere and horrifying in its emptiness. Eternia and Symphonia have some solid final areas too.

Dragon Quest VI? Dragon Quest XI's wasn't bad either, come to think of it.

SMT has some good ones, too.
