The backlog is essentially infinite and will never go away, so why bother spending loads of money on things you only might maybe get to at some nebulous future date. Anything that's truly worth playing 5-10 years from now will eventually get ported/remastered/remade.

Yes and no. You're right it's not worth buying a ton of games you will never play but you're wrong that everything worth playing will get ported. There's a lot of classics left on old machines.
