If he escalated it to a level that was physically more dangerous then hes more at fault for any lasting damage, despite her slapping him first. But shes at fault for starting it. He should probably have restrained himself and not hit her back but like oh well. Thats an optics thing mostly. Morally, as long as he didnt escalate further I dont really care. None of this is at odds with the belief that it was fine for Will Smith to smack Chris Rock.
