Unpopular opinion time: Comedy and horror go together like chocolate and spaghetti sauce. Sure, there are some exceptions (Tucker & Dale comes to mind), but A&CMF is the epitome of everything I hate about genre mashups. Here, the comedy is constantly neutered by the horror elements, and the horror itself never grows teeth because the heroes arent allowed to die or suffer meaningful injuries.
so I strongly disagree with the comedy/horror not going together, and could actually go into a whole spiel about how the two mesh extraordinarily well when paired together right due to having similar structures of relying on surprise and catching the viewer offguard.

BUT I agree with your assessment of A&CMF, and I think the reasons you give are indicative of why this film in particular didn't work for me as a horror comedy.
