I'll be doing some character design for a thing, and I have basically no experience designing characters from scratch (I mostly just draw fanart). What games/anime/etc. stand out to you as having strong character designs, and why?

it can be a bit hit or miss, but generally I'm a fan of Pokemon gym leader designs. The outfits/hairstyles usually aren't too complicated or noisy, and often give some clues to the character's background. They also encompass a pretty broad variety of body types while keeping a cohesive style. I also remember thinking Skullgirls has pretty fun designs, although I haven't played it

On the other hand, I'm not really a fan of stuff like Genshin Impact. The designs have these super intricate outfits, but it does nothing to make the characters distinct from each other IMO. Most of what I've seen for that game doesn't strike me as having much personality, feels like the focus is just making generic pretty guys/girls

Of course these are just opinions tho, and I am probably biased towards simpler designs. It's hard to define objectively "good" design, so I'm curious what other people consider good. Drop characters/series with designs you like
