BotW has more gear in armor than any other in the series, and you'll want to collect the armor. Fair warning, upgrading armor requires farming components from all over the world, which can be tedious.

Shrines are the stand in for dungeons. They're basically 1-2 room micro dungeons scattered all over the world.

Durability isn't an issue unless you want it to be. Weapons break quick, but do double damage when thrown/broken, so slash slash smash is the way to go. And the game just buries you in weapons so you'll never run out. It really does help going into the game thinking of them as disposable.

Also, get used to the d-pad for quick qeapon/shield/bow swapping. It's much faster and far less intrusive than menu surfing when a weapon breaks.

Rain does indeed suck. More stamina helps with this, but usually you're better off trying to find somewhere to make a fire and pass time. On that note, start collecting wood and flint early.
