I do think that part is good. People hate when beloved characters change and evolve but it makes a lot of sense, especially considering she was like 17 in X.

But it wasn't a problem in X either. Tidus is impulsive and narcissistic, so it's not surprising that he's hypocritical there. He also learned he's a ghost who never should've existed in the first place. Of course he wanted to have some agency in his life after being a puppet of the fayth. Yuna also wanted agency, but after Yu Yevon was killed, Tidus knew Yuna would have a whole lifetime to experience that. The sacrifice just made sense.

Also I don't think X-2 affected anything of X's story. It stayed fully at arms reach IIRC, maddeningly so. Except for the true ending but even that was all tease.
