Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII: Reunion (PC)
Crisis Core is a weird game. It's focused intently on the subject of trauma and disillusionment, and for most of its runtime it's simply impossible to take seriously. It's goofy, it's wannabe-cool, and there are very valid complaints that could be made about inserting it into the FF7 timeline. But how is the gameplay? It's a rather basic instance-based ARPG brawler. Think something like the handheld Kingdom Hearts games. There are a bunch of minigames for their own sake, which is at least one thing it shares with FF7. This new version takes advantage of non-PSP controls and a few new additions to make combat snappier, and it all feels and looks pretty good. It does however have a strange double life. The bulk of the gameplay and almost all of the difficulty lies in side-missions accessed from save points, like Blitzball in FFX. If you do some of this, you will become a walking force of destruction to everything in the story. On the other hand, this mode alone offers quite a bit of meat if you like this particular combination of RPG management and action combat, so it's hard to resist choosing it. All in all, it's a unique snapshot of a bygone era that's still pretty fun in its own right.
