We're entering an age where the entire idea of a "universally recognized celebrity" is becoming more and more meaningless of an idea. Between globalization of culture and the diversification of media presence, any given person's brand identity awareness is weaker than it's been for more than a century.
This is true. Pop culture "icons" are falling more and more into their own niche.

I think this goes beyond just YT culture as well. When was the last Beyonce? Rihanna? Angelina Jolie? The closest person I can think that would actually be a household name is Ariana Grande.
