I see lots of talk about how he was controversial and avant-garde, but it either doesn't come across in this particular song or his style was so influential that what might have been abnormal in 1960 is traditional & old-fashioned today.

the latter statement is probably close to the truth. back in 1960, it was unusual for a jazz group to not feature someone playing a harmonic instrument. and coleman played a plastic saxophone, which was also unheard of at the time. but yeah, it's funny that this easy listening jazz tune was seen as super controversial free jazz. coleman did make some pretty extreme free jazz later on in his career, though (which i suspect you would actually like better than this!).

anyway, i'm glad you somewhat liked this in spite of your indifference to jazz and dislike for trumpet playing!
