Maybe Im completely wrong here because I havent seen it, but I was heavily under the impression that World Trigger was like a sci-fi action series, not a sports series?
It is, but about half the time is spent on this simulation battle between the teams working for earth and it plays out just like a sport. By lowering the stakes from "win or the world is destroyed" to "win or maybe you lose some ranking points and don't get to go n that mission you want" let's them add actual suspense.

The simulated battles play out between 3-4 teams of 2 to 4 people. It's essentially a team battle royale except they spawn randomly instead of by their teammates and you can eject if you are far away enough from anyone to deny points if you are screwed. Their "triggers" are devices that let them use the shows power system but only in ways directly programmed into it and theres no custom designs or anything (well, at least in the simulated battles) so everyone has the same toolset and it becomes about strategy, prep, skill, and a bit of luck.

It's just refreshing to see all sides of a essentially a sporting match rationally prepare and plan and then actually work according to that plan instead of the normal thing where we get a hint about what they are doing but really they have a secret strategy they are going to bring out in the second half and when the other team thought they were pulling ahead really it was right into their hidden strategy. In world trigger, sometimes the good strategy starts out doing well and just keeps doing well and they win.

It's just a shame the main character of world trigger is very useless and the show keeps pretending like he's smart but his actions don't show that (and most of the characters are actually pretty smart) so it just feels unnatural that everyone else is respecting this guys potential. In fact, it's almost exactly like Roc from black lagoon, although I guess the OVA series had Roc actually doing a little bit.

EDIT: World trigger's strategy and prep actually remind me of Ippo a fair bit. Another one of the great sports anime. Like the fact that dealing damage actually negatively impairs peoples ability to fight and some lucky damage early into a fight can radically change the entire fight. Compared to every other fighting in anime where the more damage you take, the stronger you get. Looking at demon slayer entertainment arc especially on that.
