All the non-vendor gear in GoW (including the best sets) are totally determined and found in specific locations as rewards for specific things, so there's actually no grind at all in that sense.

I'd tend to agree that the system isn't exactly a natural fit and the game would probably largely be just as good mechanically without it, but it does serve to offer a solid reward for partaking in optional content, especially compared to most of the game's contemporaries.
