ok, thoughts.

as a standalone episode, that was fantastic. the ending was a bit rushed, but that's just DW. but as a capstone to the last couple years of story it left a lot of threads dangling. i'd hate to have to wait a few more anniversary specials to get some closure, but here we are.

as someone who has only ever seen a handful of episodes pre-"Rose" (and those were 30 years ago), i had no established connection to Tegan or Ace, but they both brought me in immediately. the way they both got to play off their respective Doctors worked quite well.

it was interesting which flashback Doctors we saw, and which we didn't. i, like many, knew Tenant was coming. I thought they might have snuck him into that scene to maybe give the spoiled a chance to talk themselves into that being his only cameo. but if i was following the conversation, the Doctors who weren't there were the ones who were ready to move on, and i think that fits the new era doctors quite well. 8.5, 9 and 10(though not actually 10 because "he doesn't want to go") want to forget the time war, 11 got his closure with the time war, and 12 got his happily ever after with river.

i'm not particularly happy with the regeneration, though it was set up with the cur4tor years ago. hopefully it leads to something interesting, and not just a nostalgia trip.
