Premise: In order to save her high school, Kousaka Honoka starts a school idol group to bring in students. The student council is resistant to the idea, however, and getting popular is never easy.

The Good: Love Live is an idol anime. Honoka gathered a group of nine girls, and together they overcome obstacles while practicing and singing. For me, at least, Love Live is one of the standouts in the genre. I don't like everyone, but quite a few of the girls are amazing. Nico is my favorite for obvious reasons, her antics never failed amuse. Honoka was really good as their leader too. Rin was also cute and funny, and her focus episodes gave her some depth. Everyone else at least contributes to the excellent group dynamic. My favorite parts in any Love Live are when everyone is together (which is why the Nijigasaki spinoff ranked so much lower). I loved scenes like the one where they were looking for a hook for their group, so everyone tried on costumes, resulting in beautiful moments like this gif.

The Bad: Love Live had a few dramatic arcs. Some I enjoyed, but some of the bigger ones felt too melodramatic. There's an arc with Kotori in the first season I absolutely hated, and then the end of the second season got sad for what I felt was a dumb reason. I vastly preferred the spinoff, Love Live Sunshine, in large part because it handled drama much more deftly than the original did.

Overall: Love Live is a great idol anime, but it isn't my favorite. Idol shows are always fun, and the group dynamic is great whenever it's just them training or goofing off. I just wasn't a fan of some of the more dramatic arcs. They werent terrible or anything, but they held LL back enough that I can't justify ranking it any higher.
