Premise: Takanashi Misha lost mother at a young age, leaving her with just a useless stepfather. He hires a maid, Kamoi Tsubame, to help out, but she turns out to be a hardcore lolicon with an annoying infatuation towards Misha!

The Good: I'm sure anyone who hadn't already heard of this read that premise summary and got really uncomfortable. And on the surfaces, yes, this is a gross concept. Tsubame is unapologetically into little girls, her former military career left her physically imposing, and she has no sense of boundaries. Thankfully, this is a comedy, so it never gets dark or goes too far. Tsubame is never portrayed as being in the right, rather she's the closest thing the anime has to an antagonist. The story is about Misha trying to use her for the top-notch cooking and cleaning while fending off annoying advances in a slapstick manner. I certainly wouldn't blame anyone who gets turned off by the premise, but if you can get past it there are a lot of solid gags. Tsubame always has some scheme or paper-thin disguise to get closer to Misha, and they usually backfire in a humorous way. I also liked Misha's school friends, especially the self-declared rival Morikawa who always shows up with her own peppy theme music for some poorly thought-out challenge.

The Bad: There's a side character, Midori, who is a masochist obsessed with getting put down by Tsubame. She shows up often enough to the point of almost being a third main character. I don't hate her, but a lot of her jokes and situations feel samey. A few episodes in Uzamaid also try to get serious or heartwarming. It does an okay job at that, but in my opinion this isn't the kind of anime that should try for those emotions. I'd have preferred if it stayed comedic throughout.

Overall: Uzamaid definitely has a questionable premise, but it's used for slapstick humor and isn't remotely dark. Tsubame trying and failing to get closer to Misha led to a lot of good jokes. I didn't like Midori or the more serious episodes very much. Still, they were a comparatively small part of a mostly fun anime.
