Besides trying to get the score on each battle it's mostly linear until the end of a world and then there are optional battles you can do and then there are challenge battles of the battles after that. Then if you want even more challenges you can play the exclusive coop battles by yourself by switching between two controllers, or with a friend. Then there is the extremely challenging DLC battles if you buy them. IMO the original M+RKB started with some promise, but then got repetitive and somewhat boring. Probably the worst Mario crossover and RPG story and game progression wise.
