My dog and I always have a stand off when I come home from work. We look at each other without moving, and then when I either say his name or abruptly make a movement, he wags his tail and comes for pets. He's an old man now though and is rapidly aging. During the pandemic he was able to run for a while and jump up a little bit on his hind legs, but now he can barely brisk walk and doesn't attempt to jump at all anymore. I've accepted that he's reaching his twilight years and while he still seems to be in good spirits, it's going to be a hard time for me when he goes.

Edit: That got depressing and strayed away from the topic subject, but the return home standoff is my favorite thing about my dog and makes the end of a work day more relieving.
