1. Black Alice (Lori Zechlin)

Looking back on the top twenty or so of my list, its clear I like deep and complex characters, but its also clear that Im a big fan of weird, quirky personalities that bring light-hearted levity to the campaign. As we reach my number one character on the list though, I feel like Alice is the perfect combination of those two approaches. Thats not to say someone like Cheetah or Freddy cant bring levity on occasion, nor is it to say that someone like Starsa or Patch cant bring complexitybut with Alice, it feels like a perfect divide between the two approaches, without becoming a cumbersome mess overall. Plus, Alice is one of a handful of NPCs that has really and truly interacted with a large number of the PC cast, thus providing so many interesting and unique angles to her characterization.

Alice is one of the many, many, MANY characters on this list who I was not around for their initial appearance. We had a mission to Dayton (which appealed to a pair of our Ohioan players) via the Oblivion Bar, where Detective Chimp wanted us to look into a young witch going by the name Black Alice. The investigation of Dayton eventually led the field team to a neighborhood codenamed Alicetown, specifically because it was where Black Alice herself was protecting the place from the Societys incursion. There was a fun little briefing from her dog, Rover, which led to one of the most delightful locations weve gotten on any city map in the campaign thus far (only Wives R Us comes close): The Parking Lot Behind Dennys. Yeah, Alice is a bit of a punk and a bit of a delinquent, and she likes to smoke weed in a Dennys Parking Lot. Whats wrong with that? What else are you gonna do at a Dennys? Eat there?

Anyway, I digress. Over the course of the session, the party ran into Alice multiple times, and she was displeased to see them. I mean, she created a magic bubble around her neighborhood and didnt exactly LIKE having to deal with intruders. Its here that we learned exactly WHY Alice was considered so powerful, because her magic specialty is that of mimesis. She can absorb the innate powers and persona of other magicians (or otherwise magical entities) and use them freely. During the course of that first mission, we got to witness Alices transformations into Blue Devil, Enchantress (I think), Nightshade, Phantom Stranger, and finally Zatanna. That last one came as Alice, believing herself to be the ultimate badass of the campaign, thought she could face off against the Spectre and survive. Needless to say, Im glad the party was able to talk her down from that suicide mission, and get her back to Zonn Zorr in one piece.

To repeat a little bit, since I covered this with Jaime and Freddys write-ups, early in the campaign, Pepper was in desperate need of just genuine companionship and normalcy, and she sought that by trying to band together any and all older teens that happened to join Zonn Zorr. This meant that Pepper quickly tried to befriend all of Freddy, Alice and Jaime, and on-paper, some of those are more compatible than others. With Freddy, hes a mature, organized person, which plays well into Peppers own scientific mind. With Jaime, hes struggling through a very similar life situation to Pepper, and hes basically a normal guy whos in WAY over his head. Both of them are perfectly reasonable in terms of friendship, and theyre both relatively polite and reserved, in comparison to the kind of dickhead frat bros that Pepper would utterly despise being around.
