NTSC=National Television System Committee
PAL=Phase Alternation Line

Used in gaming, NTSC plays at 30 FPS, while PAL plays at 25
Thats not fully correct...
NTSC updates the screen 60 times per second while PAL updates 50 times per second. Used in gaming, you want to get 60/50 or 30/25 FPS to get a lagfree experience. Most games were running at 60/50 FPS before they went 3D.
There are also games that doesnt run at 60/30/50/25 FPS which made them lag/desync.
Then there is PAL-M, popular in Brazil, that was basically NTSC with PAL color encoding.
There is also PAL-60 that alows PAL to run in 60 Hz.
The French used SECAM, which is basically PAL that handles the color different.
