That's probably a factor in the super low MAL rating. A mediocre sci-fi anime is gonna seem much worse when people go in expecting something super artsy and philosophical. I don't track anime by staff (other than voice actors) but I looked this up and I haven't seen anything else Yoshitoshi ABe worked on.
