I do feel like the claim that New Game never descends into melodrama is not very accurate, maybe it was more in the manga but there was a decent amount of drama surrounding Aoba's various character artist rivals, and at least some of that should have been in S2. It was one of the first sixteen anime I watched, so my memory of it isn't the greatest. I can't recall any real dramatic arcs, though.
