Seriously, every game since #47 I'm like "wait why is this in the 40s, it's so GOAT", and then "oh yeah everything from here upward is outrageously good"

#43 Resident Evil 4

The story is pretty dumb, the game is too long, there's inventory management, and the controls are objectively not good--you have to stand still to shoot!

BUT here's my theory: the handgun and shotgun, are too awesome. Standing still to shoot, *forces* you to focus on enjoying the shooting, as you stare at the gun and laser sight, carefully lining up the shots, and feeling the relief of each headshot's ridiculous knockback

Here's more evidence: finding handgun and shotgun ammo never gets old, because you're so excited to shoot those two guns more. The game barely has any guns besides those, and nobody cares, because those two feel so good.

I really really respect how they just let you figure out how to play. There is zero tutorial. It makes it really fun to slowly figure out how to do cool moves like the kick. So exciting to see those button prompts and figure them out ("did that prompt just say suplex??").

Also, first game with good inventory management, and good escort missions. Wat!

BEST LEVEL: The first big fight, by the bell tower, is one of the best fights in video game history. Just a great difficult combat puzzle to kick off the game with, a kind of playground to get stuck in, giving you time to figure out how to play.
