OMG... Starting here at #47 and onward, I really really really like these games. Like I feel like all of these from now on, I've at some point said IRL to someone, "oh yeah, I've played that, yeah, that's probly the greatest game ever made, pretty much."

No offense to Portrait of Ruin.

#47 Golf Story

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/user_image/7/8/3/AABIPnAADktP.jpg

I've always wanted to love golf, and video games about golf. But they all end up feeling dry, and empty. They're so solitary, and I quickly ask, why am I playing this?

Golf Story is the solution I didn't know I needed: a very cute JRPG-feeling story, where you're the underdog, and you wanna be the best, Ash Ketchum style. And it worked: every time I played golf in the story, I was 100% on board and fully invested in playing the best golf I could. Every time I had the chance to increase a stat point, I spent several minutes weighing my options!

But it's not all tournaments and courses--you can drop a ball and take a shot at any moment while walking around, which means you may be doing it to solve problems for characters, to find secrets, to play a minigame, or just to screw around.

It's still golf, but they finally made a satisfying full-length game out of it. Turns out, golf does not make a game, in and of itself. But it can be a good game mechanic, within a good game.

BEST LEVEL: Hanging out with the old folks at Tidy Park. It's a good comedy section of the game, 'cause the old folks are all about etiquette and rules, and gatekeeping
