First it's just replacing pride flags with the American flag because "hey, that's innocent enough! Wink wink". People don't mind that, and then suddenly the flags get replaced by worse things. If someone complains then "Hey man, it's not like pride flags don't get replaced all the time. What's the big deal?" It's all about getting people indifferent about these things early, because going full bigot from the start gets you shut down a lot faster than partially being one.
