#50 New Super Mario Bros. U

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/user_image/9/6/3/AABIPnAADkgb.jpg

I believe NSMBU is the best 2d Mario game, and here's why:

1. The common flying squirrel suit feels reaaaaaally good to glide with. The longer you glide the faster you go, but you can still bounce off enemies. Also you actually interact with the level still, unlike the SMW cape.

2. The air-stall lets you play more recklessly, because you can skillfully recover from a misinformed jump, by using an airstall or two. Also you look really cool if you do this.

3. Wall jumping feels good, also it helps because dying in pits sucks, and wall jumping helps you get out.

4. Very few auto-scrollers, and levels are never too long like most of NSMBWii.

5. Multiplayer cooperative is fun and silly.

6. Every fortress and castle have a very good physics gimmick, like gears, sine-wave-lava, swings, etc.

I think the only thing that SMW has better than NSMBU, is better secrets (which is, admittedly, pretty important).

BEST LEVEL: "Starry Night" a spooky level, that is NOT a ghost house (yay), and is also re-stylized like Van Gogh's Starry Night, for no reason besides being awesome. I also super enjoy the NSMBU levels that are 100% horizontal, screen cannot scroll upward.
