I did some looking around on reddit about Garden of Sinners, apparently being confused the first time through isn't unusual, but it still should've had that "everything clicks together" moment I was waiting for. I guess there was also a recap movie before the 7th movie that puts important events in chronological order for increased clarity, maybe that would've helped me. I still would've hated the (7th movie spoilers) drool scene no matter what, but the plot being confusing was a bit my fault for missing that recap.
