I can't word count on my phone but this write-up feels longer than usual. I am talking about an eight movie series, though.

4 (Movie). The Garden of Sinners

Various (8 movies plus 2 extras)
My Score: 2/10, MAL Score: 7.59/10 Movie 1 (not listing all of them)
Best Character: Aozaki Touko

Premise: A detective agency investigates paranormal occurrences with the help of Ryougi Shiki, a woman with mysterious powers.

The Good: The production values were high quality. It had a unique art style and good music accompanying the action scenes, which made it interesting to watch. Some movies were better than others, but the production carried me through whenever the story didn't.

The Bad: Most of the movies in The Garden of Sinners were boring or confusing. Call me stupid if you want, Im sure everyone will at some point in this ranking, but I struggled to keep up with some of the long conversations where they philosophized about the difference between floating and flying, or whatever. I still wonder if the Crunchyroll subtitles just weren't very good because I watch a lot of anime and I've never had that much trouble following conversations. It didn't help that the story was told out of order in a way that felt designed to be confusing. I'm wary of talking about the premise much because I don't remember if they explain things central to Shiki's character in the first movie or the fifth movie. In any case, I kept hoping everything would click together at some point. For me, at least, it never did.

Being boring or confusing isnt why I rank this low, though. The seventh movie was one of the worst things Ive ever seen. It's hard to talk about anything that deep into a series without some amount of spoilers, and there's plenty I'd complain about if I could, but I'll just talk about a few things from the movie's central conflict. Shiki is up against a deranged killer, but Kokutou, being the boring good guy that he is, says hell never forgive her if she kills that murderer. This artificially weakens her so that the plot can happen, and it leads to some really ugly scenes that should've easily been avoided. Kokutous sudden morality doesnt even make sense. This is the seventh movie in the series, shes killed plenty of other people already!

Overall: The Garden of Sinners might be worth watching for the strength of its production and interesting visuals alone. I just couldnt get into it. Most of the movies put me to sleep until I hit one that made me angry.
