Miyafuji Yoshiko joins the Strike Witches squadron to help defend humanity. The Good: Strike Witches has a large cast of characters. Theyre all very basic, essentially each having one or two gimmicks that are usually related to their nationality. Still, there are some fun moments where they play off each other well. The cute girls side of the show is at least fine. Im going to complain about the Neuroi below, but there are also a few action scenes that are decent, especially in the movie. The Bad: The Neuroi are my go-to example for a boring antagonist. Theyve invaded most of Europe, but they have absolutely zero personality. Where did the Neuroi come from, and what do they want? I dunno. They only exist to act as a stand-in for World War II Germany so they can have a German witch without offending anyone. Otherwise, theyre just shapeshifting blobs that come in waves and explode if a witch shoots their weak point. The setting is also such a letdown. This is from Luminous Witches, but I'll mention it to prove my point (and I'm really hoping LW won't have any Neuroi battles at all for me to complain about). These are invading aliens, you can do literally anything with them. So, of course, Luminous Witches opens with an exact replica of Dunkirk from WW2. It's just so lazy and unimaginative. Overall: Strike Witches isnt bad. Its a lot better than Brave Witches, at least, because at least none of the characters here are terrible. There just isnt much depth to anyone, and the Neuroi are a black void of enjoyment that drag everything else about this setting down. Still, there are some fun moments, and none of the girls in this universe wear pants! It has that going for it at least. Another season has come out since I last watched Strike Witches up to the movie, but I'm not sure I want to bother with it.
