#55 Boktai: The Sun is in Your Hand

This game would probably be in the top 20, but the "solar sensor on the cart" gimmick, kinda ruins it, sadly =(

It almost is a good gimmick: it changes the way you play, depending on if you have IRL sunlight available. However, the game's main bosses REQUIRE sunlight to begin the fight, meaning, depending on your real life, you may be unable to continue.

But anyway, the gameplay is isometric Metal Gear Solid VR missions but with really good atmosphere, and some Action RPG elements. I love the post-apocalyptic-castlevania setting and its music.

My favorite innovation is the TRAP system. Each of the ~30 mini-dungeons has a "Trap" room--suddenly the doors shut, the game says "TRAP" and says something like "hit these switches without being seen" or "defeat the 4 mummies". It's just a fun surprise that ends up being a great finale to the mini-dungeon, instead of some predictable mini-boss fight.

I prefer the mini-dungeons, but I do respect the massive mega-dungeons. They're like 3D-Zelda game dungeons, but even bigger. They have good dungeon-sized puzzles, but also fun mini-puzzles, usually logic or sokobon puzzles, that are impressively difficult--in fact, the game's Easy Mode mainly just makes the game's puzzles easier (LOL).

BEST LEVEL: The "Catacomb" mini-dungeon, which introduces mummies, an enemy type that can always HEAR your footsteps! It's so evil. Imagine if that was in metal gear solid games!!
