Pokemon and Digimon have some conceptual similarities -- evolving monsters, kid trainers, and conventional RPGs (although the original Digivice games are nothing like the Pokemon games or the MR games).

Monster Rancher doesn't have much overlap, other than being a monster franchise. The core games weren't conventional RPGs, the monsters were basically just variations on a few core designs, no evolution (although fusion was an option in the games, but that was an unlimited feature)

Digimon as a concept was probably closer to Monster Rancher, but MR didn't really have as many similarities. It was just something that got picked up to cash in on the monster-partner craze. Honestly, something like Blue Dragon might've had more in common with Digimon than MR.

They each had a CCG and a video game CCG (although MR had 2 CCGs since the VG CCG was different and it was sold over in Japan, whereas the normal CCG was based on the US version of the anime... and I think the Digimon CCG might've been different)

I wish they'd do something with MR again, although the core game mechanics aren't so much my thing anymore.

The anime was a favorite as a kid because I was into rollerblading

I tried rewatching some of it about a year ago... it doesn't hold up so well.

It was all kinds of terrible if you weren't six when you were watching it -- but like 90% of the issues revolved about Genki and Mocchi where the rest was palatable.

Not really? The core characteristic of V-Pet sims was care, which wasn't the focus of MR. The MR games' goal -- the core games, anyway -- was to get a monster to win all of the tourneys, but you usually had to go through a bunch of monsters because you needed your facilities and get access to the training methods (and better monsters) to do it.

Then the spinoffs were a mix.

Like Tomodachi?

I assume you mean Tamagotchi. That and the original Digimon are V-Pets. However, Digimon had a RPG series.
