The problem with Disney-era Star Wars is how corporate it is.

Yes, Episode 7 was made in reaction to the PT hate, which is why it went hard on riding the OT's tail.
Rogue One was good - they gave that team freedom to tell a story and it went well.
Episode 8 was handed off to a second director, broke a unified vision.
Solo was good - that team already had freedom to tell a story, and it didn't go as well because people didn't want to see a recasting.
And Episode 9 was reeling everything back in from Episode 8.

The shows have been back and forth, but you can tell watching Mandalorian and Solo that they are made by Star Wars fans. Abrams was not a Star Wars fan. Johnson was maybe the opposite.

Disney isn't running away from the PT, it's running towards it and away from the ST. That's why all the new material is either immediately post-ROTJ or post-ROTS.
