As always, the problem is that Democrats are held to a much higher standard than Republicans, mostly because the majority of the voters in this country are conservative in their beliefs. Republicans can get away with shitting on people, insulting people and just generally being raging assholes, because the majority of voters look at that behavior as abhorrent...but then they look at the other side of the aisle and think "they're too progressive and want to raise my taxes and my finances matter more than anything else". Suddenly it's a coin flip. And if the Democrats start treating the GOP the way the GOP treats them, suddenly the scales shift to "both sides are horrible, but at least the GOP wants to cut my taxes."

Long story short, Americans as a collective as self-centered assholes, and are more than willing to let assholes run the country, so long as they aren't negatively impacted in an obvious way.
