I think I've picked up this habit of comparisons from talking politics with family living elsewhere, but I can definitely understand your irritation. It's not like the UK (or many other places) should be proud of how things currently work, and it's never far removed from issues elsewhere. And yeah, protected beliefs absolutely need clarifying.
