Type-casting always happened with some roles, but it wasn't any more universal back then than now. And, honestly, the kind of type-casting was the same kind as now where somebody was known as being a cowboy, action hero, spy, etc, rather than just one name -- with the exception of certain high-profile characters where they played the same role repeatedly.

I ask because my uncle 100% believes what ever persona a person has as a character in a movie or show is how they are in real life. Mostly curious if that was the case in earlier movies and shows.

Uh, guessing this wasn't that far back in the day...

And there have been some actors who basically played an exaggerated version of themselves.
