Ultimately it still came down to the fact that Canada was a net loss on the books & was not worth dealing with. It wasn't like Britain didn't put down rebellions in Canada before. Britain was mostly happy the Canadians would be nominally British and pay deference to the crown, since managing the region was more trouble than it was worth.

Fun fact, rail lines were dug up before I was born, starving out the old rail communities that relied on it, buses would be the solution, which have also been phased out over the past decade.
