Basically, they took some Sword/Shield Pokemon and redesigned them as if they were Gen 1 Pokemon, taking into account the design philosophy of mid-90's Game Freak, as well as the limitations of the sprite space that they had to work with on the Game Boy (and color palettes of the Super Game Boy).
