In recent years they've been harmed by playing games that aren't particularly interesting, by excessive self promotion, and by having to change their format to meet advertiser rules. Jon makes like 4 videos a year. People generally don't unsubscribe from channels that produce little content. His white supremacist views that he's shared away from his channel didn't really offend his fans that much. I don't know why Jon has more subscribers.
