X6 is easily the worst. It has actively bad/oppressive level design that punishes players for playing carefully. For some reason, they made certain upgrades and unlocks permanently missable if the rescue targets get corrupted by the virus enemies. They do not respawn when you exit the level and return. That's just terrible, terrible game design. Not to mention the bad levels themselves.

At worst, X7 is underwhelming and has wonky 3D segments. It's not amazing, but it's not nearly as bad as people remember. I replayed it somewhat recently, and apart from some weirdness attributed to camera angles and platforming in the 3D parts, it was a serviceably fun game.
