The weird thing is that even with the bad story, the reboot was creative and fun. The weapon color gimmick was a little forced, but it had some very cool level design, and at least one of the boss fights was top tier (you know the one, no spoilers)

DMC2 was just bland and imbalanced the whole way through.
Too dumbed down for me, holding buttons for a few moves replaced weapon switching, the infinite juggling was disappointing until DMC5 Nero came along and we all had to accept it was here to stay, Vergil set a record for weakest, lamest incarnation ever and it even rubbed off on the DMC5 version (Did you see him walking slowly to the side throwing one sword at a time after all that talk about wanting a big fight with Dante?) S rank no effort, dodge and then hit them really hard for free, constant cinematic interjections in fights to compensate for bad gameplay. They did something dumb with the DT didn't they? Makes enemies float in midair instead of working conventionally. And of course El Donte himself.
Color coded enemies were outright bad, although DMC3 has some serious misses in the enemy department at least you can say the 3/4/5 style gameplay was still finding its footing. (The razor shield guys, the fallen, the invisible green things, I still haven't determined what the dev intended strat for Geryon is to this day)
I'm guessing by top tier we're talking about Bob. It had an aesthetic but the gameplay wasn't there. You dodge big waves then press buttons then hit him then fight enemies.

I find it easier to sympathise with 2's haplessness than the reboot's active hostility toward fans of the series. If all else fails, 2 has cheat codes too.
