It really is a testament to the state of our country right now. I think it helps emphasize that this isn't a temporary setback or roadblock. This isn't going to resolve itself in a few years. America is on a hard downward slant and there's no reason to think things aren't going to get worse. I see a lot of Americans, even intelligent Americans, assume that society is always on a constant upward (if bumpy) trajectory.
