If they had fought back the people dragging them that would just make a lot more sense but they reacted like something out of a comedy skit where they were allowing themselves to be dragged off and as soon as people had their backs turned they'd just scoot right on back to the freeway. They can't fight back because you have to assume if someone's gonna assault you for being in the way that they'll get even more violent if you fight back.
